The Diploma in Liberal Studies (DLS) is a post-master’s academic program that complements and extends the educational goals of the Master of Interdisciplinary Studies (MIS) degree. Designed for intellectually curious and self-directed graduate students, the DLS deepens disciplinary knowledge, advances interdisciplinary research skills, and culminates in a substantial independent research project or thesis.
About the Program
The Diploma in Liberal Studies (DLS) is a selective post-master’s program designed for intellectually motivated adult learners pursuing advanced interdisciplinary study beyond the Master of Interdisciplinary Studies (MIS) or a similar graduate liberal studies degree. The program offers students the opportunity to deepen their expertise in two academic focus disciplines, refine their interdisciplinary research skills, and complete a substantial independent thesis or project.
While rooted in the liberal arts, the DLS is tailored for working professionals, retirees, and other non-traditional university students who wish to expand their academic foundation through graduate-level inquiry. Courses are taught by distinguished Rice faculty and select visiting scholars, maintaining the university's high academic standards.
The program welcomes non-MIS students on a case-by-case basis, based on prior academic preparation and future intellectual goals. Well-prepared applicants accepted into the program benefit from advanced coursework, faculty mentorship, and the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to academic and public discourse, whether through research, teaching, writing, community engagement, or professional practice.
