Admission to the Diploma in Liberal Studies (DLS) program is selective and based on a thorough review of each applicant’s academic preparation, writing ability, research readiness, and capacity for independent, graduate-level work. Applicants must also complete an admissions interview with the program director. While most applicants will have completed the Rice Master of Liberal Studies (MLS) or Master of Interdisciplinary Studies (MIS) degree, students with equivalent graduate liberal studies or related degrees from other institutions may also be considered on a case-by-case basis.
The following list provides an overview of the materials needed to apply for the DLS program:
- Completed online application
- Application fee ($85)
- Current resume
- Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
- Two references who will be asked to provide a letter of recommendation
- Personal statement
- Proposal for DLS Study
- Writing sample
Applicants must follow the guidelines outlined in the official DLS Application Instructions document. This includes specific directions for preparing the Personal Statement, Proposal for DLS Study, and Writing Sample. Please review the document carefully before submitting your materials.
Once your application has been submitted and reviewed, you will be invited to schedule an admissions interview.
The Diploma in Liberal Studies Program admits students for the Fall admission cycle only. The application deadline is May 15.
